Martha Summa-Chadwick has achieved a national reputation as an educator, presenter, performer, and advocate for the cause of music in therapy. She has performed as piano and harpsichord soloist with orchestras across the country and served for twenty-six years on the faculty of the Cadek Conservatory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. For the past decade, Dr. Summa-Chadwick has explored various ways to use music for therapeutic as well as aesthetic ends. She is the Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Music Therapy Gateway in Communications, Inc., and a frequent guest speaker at both national and regional conferences, discussing the use of biomedical music techniques for challenged children. She has given two TED talks and established a series of both chamber and solo concerts to help educate diverse audiences in an overview of biomedical music protocols, and how music can be used in collaboration with improved neural learning patterns. She is also exploring how biomedical music protocols could be automated into software applications for persons with motor, speech, or cognition challenges.

Unique teaching methodes: Teaching style includes the study of various forms of technique, theory, musical structure, music history, ear training, and literature. Specialized teaching experience includes both traditional pedagogy techniques and the use of computer technology and internet-based application training to assist in teaching children with autism. Protocols have been created for both typically and atypically developing student populations, including a tiered color-coded music reading system created for an inclusive course at the Chattanooga Public Library where neuro-diverse students can enjoy group piano lessons alongside their neuro-typical peers.

Music Therapy Gateway in Communication (MTGIC), Inc., Chattanooga, TN – 2003-present
Executive Director and founder of 501(c)3 nonprofit organization MTGIC. Assumed total responsibility for start-up paperwork efforts, including collaboration with state of Tennessee and IRS to create the corporation and gain its 501(c)3 status, recruiting the board of directors, and obtaining initial funding with grants efforts. Since start-up, maintained responsibility for all work needed for logistic, creative, and collaborative responsibilities.
MTGIC promotes the use of biomedical music techniques to support children with motor, cognition, and speech challenges. The support has been offered via 1) one-on-one therapy sessions as grant funding permits; 2) training and workshops for therapeutic professionals, parents, educators, and caregivers of those with special needs; 3) creation of a concert series to help educate current concert patrons and bring in new audience members to see the potential value of music in the therapeutic world; 4) creation of a high level specification for special software to automate certain of the biomedical cognition techniques and the necessary research to develop and test the application; and 5) coordination with area resources providing supporting to persons with special needs. Extensive collaboration with many organizations in the Chattanooga area, including the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Departments of Music, Education, Computer Science, Physical Therapy, and Psychology. Additional wide-ranging collaboration has been established with Signal Centers, Siskin Children’s Institute, Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, and Orange Grove Center. Project Manager for Communications Management System II (CMSII), a telephone/data management system comprised of approximately 160 on-line screens, 1200 programs, 200 files, and an I/O subsystem. Responsible for analysis, design, and software implementation as well as being primary technical contact point for all customers. Served as the technical liaison with Systems stuff in all areas of CICS and DASD management. Responsible for intensive testing of upgrades for CISC region and mainframe disk devices.
Aetna Life & Casualty, Windsor, CT – 1984-1989
Project Leader/Senior Systems Analyst of the Bond Processing System. Developed specifications and participated in programing, testing, and implementation of new system feature and modification to the on-line and batch processing facilities. Served as the technical focal point to the area, participated in and coordinated resource planning and system software upgrades. Provided training to team members, introduced new tools and methods to the department.

Solo Piano – Encapsulated representative performances over the last fifteen years include solo recital performances of different programs in various locations across the country. Programs have included an all-Medtner lecture recital as well as a showcase program of lesser-known works by Wölfl, Bernstein, and Tjeknavorian. Current recital program highlights works by composers with neural dysfunction.
Chamber Music – Martha is in demand as both a collaborative artist and chamber player. Typical chamber concerts over the last fifteen years include concerts performed in combination with technical presentations and pre-concert lectures demonstrating the scientific elements of music. Repertoire emphasizes work by composers with neural dysfunction (Messiaen, Beethoven). Presentations can be made available at local hospitals and rehabilitation centers to disseminate information to the therapeutic staff.
Harpsichord soloist – Guest artist appearances with the Huntsville Alabama Symphony 1999, 2006, and 2007.
Piano Concerto soloist – Appearances in Pennsylvania (Erie Chamber Orchestra), New York (Syracuse Symphony), Maine (Pierre Monteaux Domaine School), Connecticut (Hartt School of Music), and Massachusetts (Holyoke Civic Orchestra).
Orchestral player – Keyboard player for multiple performances with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2018.

Director of the Chattanooga Harp Ensemble from 2012 to 2015. The Ensemble, an outreach program of the Jan Pennington Gray Harp Scholarship, performs two sets of programs twice a year and consists of twelve to sixteen harpers playing ensemble music ranging in style from Renaissance, Scottish, Irish, Folk, to many other varied styles of music. Responsible for music selection, musical coaching, and conducting the ensemble.
